Bahia dolls were made in Bahia, Brazil that date back to the early 1900s. Their sizes varied from 11 to 20in tall. They have embroidered faces and sometimes teeth. Bahia dolls were dressed in cotton, or linen skirts with lace trims, linen slips, cloth shoes were sewn directly to their feet. Some dolls have sashes made of lace, satin, silk-like material, and cotton plaid. Their lavish jewelry was made of colored pieces of tin foil, glass beads, and metal beads, and metal chain necklaces. Their fingernails were cleverly made of porcupine quills, celluloid, or in some cases real human nails. Male dolls were also made. Due to age, only a few have fingernails in good condition. Bahia dolls looked anatomically correct, with embroidered genitalia. Similar dolls were also made in Haiti. Some have a doll-shaped label that reads "Bahia.”
